BIODIVERSITY

Nature is vanishing. Oceans are going down the drain. Intensive farming is eradicating European wildlife. Europe is failing to meet its own biodiversity targets.

A Europe for Nature & People

From farmland birds to insects, we are losing the web of life that supports our own life. But conservation has proved to work – from saving endangered species to protected areas, good EU policies are bringing species and habitats back from the brink. Choosing conservation or destruction is a political choice. The European Parliament can decide if Europe destroys or protects nature.

Therefore, the upcoming European Parliament should:

1. Fully implement and enforce the EU’s powerful nature laws – the Birds and Habitats Directives – in all Member States, reversing the erosion of the rule of law of recent years.

The European Parliament has crucial decision-making power alongside national governments and can help make or break conservation efforts.

2. End bycatch of seabirds, marine mammals and sea turtles by ensuring that Member States implement, control and enforce fishing rules across its fleets, including those fishing outside of EU waters.

The European Parliament has driven the progressive reform of the Common Fisheries Policy to minimise the impact of fishing on the marine environment, but more recently has been backtracking and giving in to private interest gains at the cost of societal benefits. The next Parliament must do better.

3. Stop environmentally damaging farming in Europe and ensure that the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) includes strong environmental safeguards on all CAP spending so farming works in harmony with nature.

The European Parliament Agriculture Committee has killed past reform efforts and has been a constant obstacle on the road to more sustainable farming. This must change.
